Migrant Youth Driving Safely

Many young people have trouble getting a job or furthering their education because of lack of access to a car or licence. Since starting in February 2016, our driving lessons program has helped 83 students to learn safety rules and get real experience driving on Sydney roads. The most recent course started in March, with each student receiving up to 15 hours of subsidised driving lessons that can cost more than $80 per hour.

Learner permits account for 11 per cent of all drivers on Bankstown roads, compared to only four per cent in North Sydney and Sutherland. These learners could be contributing to road accidents in the area, so this project from the NRMA and Metro Assist is aimed not only at helping individuals learn to drive, but increasing road safety for everyone.

...more than 50% of students have received their P-plates or Provisional Driver’s Licence since completing the course.

Metro Assist’s Settlement Services is proud to say that more than 50% of students have received their P-plates or Provisional Driver’s Licence since completing the course.
