Every year during Refugee Week we celebrate the refugees in our Metro Assist community.

This year’s theme “ Finding Freedom in Family” acknowledges the journey to safety  for refugees. This can often mean  leaving behind loved ones, cultures, and familiar surroundings. Yet, amidst these challenges, families are reunited, new bonds are formed, and a sense of belonging is rediscovered.

To highlight the importance of family in the refugee experience Metro Assist celebrated with a series of community events throughout the weeklong observance.

Beginning with the “Women Around the Table” event, where women from diverse backgrounds came together to discuss family gender balance, both in their countries of birth and here in Australia.

The morning started with fun icebreaker games, setting a warm and welcoming tone for the discussion. Our very own Settlement Team Leader, Jasmine shared an insightful presentation on gender roles in society, highlighting key issues and sparking meaningful conversations with participants. Co-hosted by Tehara from the Afghan Peace Foundation, who shared relatable stories that resonated deeply with everyone present.

We must thank our partners from Bread and Butter Project and Tafe NSW, for the generous lucky door prizes.

The Annual Gala Dinner was a vibrant celebration of diversity, with a sea of colours and traditional dress showcasing the rich cultural heritage of our community.

Hosted by Saki Haidari, Refugee Rights Campaigner at Amnesty International Australia, the evening featured heartfelt speeches and inspiring messages. Hon. Tony Burke MP delivered a welcome home speech, acknowledging that while the migration process hasn't always been perfect, when done right, it can be immensely beneficial. We also heard from Hon. Chris Minns MP, NSW Premier, and Hon. Jihad Dib MP, through video messages, along with in-person addresses from Hon. Stephen Kamper, MP, and Hon. Sophie Cotsis for Mark Coure.

Nina Shahi, CEO of Metro Assist, highlighted our ongoing commitment to supporting refugees, while Paul Power, CEO of Refugee Council Australia, shared powerful insights. Tuan Pham, Head of Social Impact, APAC at LinkedIn, and Richard Wonders, Metro Assist Board Director, emphasised the importance of social impact and community support.

The evening was filled with joy and energy, featuring music performances, dancing, and a cultural fashion show displaying traditional dress from around the world. A special presentation of "You Can’t Ask That," our Metro version of the ABC TV show, dispelled common myths about the attitudes of refugees, fostering greater understanding and empathy. We also showcased a moving video highlighting the employment journeys of refugees, illustrating their determination and success.

In collaboration with several like-minded organisations, Metro Assist hosted a vibrant Family Fun Day at the North Bankstown Soccer Club. The event welcomed around 150 participants from our diverse community, showcasing the strength and unity of our local area.

Highlights included an exciting soccer tournament for kids, a fun-filled photo booth, face painting and a dedicated play zone. Information stalls provided valuable resources, and participants in the soccer tournament were awarded medals and trophies. Toys and gifts were also distributed, ensuring everyone left with a smile. A live DJ kept the energy high with lively music, adding to the celebratory environment of the event.

Metro Assist would like to thank the organisations and volunteers who made our Refugee Week celebrations a success and contributed to the positive impact events like these have on our community.  

Acknowledging the hardships faced by those seeking freedom and the incredible courage it takes to rebuild their lives in a new land gave us the opportunity to share stories, raise awareness, and foster a community that values diversity and inclusivity.
