Metro Assist welcomes Government Action to End ‘No Grounds’ Evictions

Metro Assist is excited to announce that the NSW Government will soon introduce new laws to end 'no grounds' evictions for renters. We commend the Government's initiative to the reform, which will require homeowners to provide a valid reason to terminate a tenancy for both periodic and fixed-term leases.

Currently, rental property owners can end a residential periodic lease at any time, without providing any reason. This, combined with the toughest rental market in decades—characterised by historically low vacancy rates and ever-increasing rent prices—leaves renters vulnerable to eviction at any moment.

Metro Assist’s Southern Sydney Tenants Advice and Advocacy Service is dedicated to supporting renters in Southern Sydney, ensuring their rights are upheld. We have actively supported the 'Make Renting Fairer' campaign led by our peak body, the Tenants Union, advocating for these crucial changes.

"Metro Assist stands with all renters in NSW in celebrating this historic reform," says CEO Nina Shahi. "We have witnessed a significant increase in calls to our advice line from tenants in the Southern Sydney community experiencing housing instability. Requiring landlords to provide a valid reason for ending a tenancy will create a more equitable and secure housing environment that tenants deserve."

This long-awaited reform will align NSW with other states, providing renters with the security and stability they need. We acknowledge the tireless efforts of the peak bodies Tenants Union, NCOSS, and many renters in advocating for this reform over the years.

Metro Assist will continue to support and advocate for renters, ensuring their rights are protected and their voices are heard.
