Kate's Journey
From Fear to Independence: Kate’s Australian Journey
Kate, a Vietnamese immigrant, was referred to Metro Assist by Centrelink after enduring severe domestic violence. She came to Australia after marrying her ex-husband, with whom she shares three children. When she sought help, Kate was distressed and hesitant to reveal the full extent of her abuse. Her husband had been physically, emotionally, and financially abusive, forcing her to cover his gambling expenses. By the time she reached out, she and her children had been kicked out and were staying with relatives.
Metro Assist prioritised Kate’s safety and well-being, providing her with counselling, one-on-one coaching, and connecting her with a women’s support circle. This helped her regain confidence and build social connections. Kate also joined the Ladies Job Fit program, which introduced her to the Australian job market. Inspired to work in aged care or disability services, she was linked to an NDIS provider, marking the start of her path to financial independence.
“Kate’s progress has been remarkable. She secured work, became involved in community programs, and expressed a desire to share her story in Metro Assist’s “Brave Women—Their Australian Journey” video. She is now working toward’s applying for public housing and Australian citizenship, and is financially independent, confident, and pursuing further studies, a testament to Metro Assist’s holistic support.”
