10 Ways Metro Assist Supports Families

From housing stress to parenting struggles, Metro Assist supports families in a number of different ways. Metro Assist provides free, culturally safe support through tailored casework, accredited programs, and community activities. Our services help families stay safe, connected, and resilient when they need it most.

Families face many challenges, with it not always being clear where to turn for help in times of hardship or crisis. When life feels overwhelming, having someone who understands your circumstances can make a real difference. Metro Assist has been supporting communities across Sydney since 1986, providing family services that focus on safety, wellbeing, connection, and so much more.

This article explores some of the real problems families encounter and how Metro Assist can provide practical, respectful support.

1. My children and I are at risk of being homeless. Where can I get help?

If you are worried about losing your home, Metro Assist can provide support. Families are guided through housing pathways, connected with services, and supported to stay safe. The goal is always to keep children with their families and prevent unnecessary disruption.

2. I’m thinking of leaving my partner but don’t know what support is out there.

Experiencing family or domestic violence can feel isolating. Metro Assist offers safe entry points into support services and helps families plan their next steps with dignity and care. You will be treated with respect and connected to resources that prioritise your safety.

3. My child is having problems at school. What support is available?

Our team works closely with local schools to help children who are struggling. We can liaise with teachers, arrange assessments, and provide referrals to in-house psychology support. Families are supported to build stronger relationships at home and help children succeed in their education.

4. I need help with parenting routines and family life.

Parenting can be tough, and every family has unique needs. Metro Assist runs accredited parenting programs such as Triple P, Circle of Security, and Tuning Into Kids. These programs provide practical strategies for communication, daily routines, and building positive connections within the family.

5. My teenager wants to leave school. Can you help?

When young people disengage from education, early intervention is important. Metro Assist supports teenagers to explore their options, remain connected to learning, or transition into training and community activities. This gives them the confidence to plan for a positive future.

6. We’re struggling with our mental health. Who can we talk to?

Families facing stress, anxiety, or depression can access counselling and wellbeing support. Metro Assist provides early intervention so that challenges are addressed before they become overwhelming. Services are child- and family-centred, and always respectful of cultural needs.

7. I can’t afford counselling or casework. Are there free services?

Yes. Metro Assist’s programs are free of charge, making them accessible to families who need support but may not be able to pay. Funding ensures that financial barriers do not prevent families from accessing help.

These services include:

  • Casework and parenting support delivered in the home
  • Evidence-based group programs to strengthen families

8. I need help understanding my legal or financial rights.

Families are often referred to our accredited financial counsellors who can negotiate bills or explain legal rights. This support eases financial stress and allows families to focus on creating a stable and nurturing home environment.

9. I want to connect with other parents and community groups.

Metro Assist provides opportunities to join group activities such as parenting workshops, wellbeing sessions, and cultural connection events. These programs build confidence, reduce isolation, and strengthen community networks.

10. English isn’t my first language. Can I still get help?

Yes. Metro Assist provides services in Chinese, Arabic, and Vietnamese, along with English. Our staff are trained to ensure support is culturally safe and inclusive, so every family feels respected and understood.

Metro Assist supports families in Bankstown, Campsie, Condell Park and surrounds.

Specialised Programs to Support Families

Metro Assist’s Family Preservation Program is a voluntary service that helps families keep children safe at home and out of the child protection system. Support is usually offered for up to 12 months and tailored to each family’s circumstances.

The Community and Family Support program provides short-term, early intervention for children, young people, and families experiencing vulnerability. Through casework, group activities, and community connection, it strengthens wellbeing and resilience.
