“I am writing to express my gratitude for the incredible experience I had attending the Tuning into Kids, 123 Magic, and Bringing Up Great Kids workshops. Family Support Services FAQs
Our family support services are guided by clear standards and principles. We comply with the NSW Child Safe Standards, and all staff hold current Working With Children Checks. These measures ensure the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of every child and young person we support.
Our practice is evidence-informed and delivered by trained professionals. Parenting programs include Triple P, Tuning Into Kids, Bringing Up Great Kids, Circle of Security, and Tuning in to Teen. Families also benefit from multilingual staff who can provide support in Chinese, Arabic, and Vietnamese, ensuring services are culturally safe and responsive.
Please see below FAQs for more detailed information regarding how you can access our family support services and programs.
What are family preservation services and who can access them?
Our Family Preservation program is a voluntary service that helps families keep children safe at home. The program supports parents who are expecting a baby or caring for children up to 18 years of age. Most referrals come from the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ), though some families can self-refer or be referred by other community services.
What kind of support does the Family Preservation program offer?
Families receive tailored casework and parenting support that is child- and family-centred, culturally safe, and responsive. Support may include help with routines, communication, emotional wellbeing, or connecting with other services. Our caseworkers work directly with families in their homes across Liverpool, Fairfield, and Bankstown.
How long can families receive support?
Support through the Family Preservation program is available for up to 12 months. In some circumstances, this may be extended, depending on the needs of the family.
What is the Community and Family Support (CAFS) program?
The Community and Family Support program (formerly Targeted Early Intervention, or TEI) provides short-term, early intervention support for children, young people, families, and communities. CAFS offers up to six months of individual support and group programs designed to strengthen wellbeing, education, and family connections.
Who can access the CAFS program at Metro Assist?
CAFS is open to children, young people, families, and community members experiencing vulnerability or risk. The program focuses on improving safety and wellbeing, with particular support for families managing parenting challenges, school engagement, or mental health concerns. Services are culturally safe and inclusive of people from diverse backgrounds.
What areas do Metro Assist family support services cover?
Metro Assist offers our family support programs in the following areas:
- Family Preservation: Bankstown, Fairfield, Liverpool
- CAFS: Inner West, Strathfield, Canada Bay, Burwood, and Glebe
What types of group programs are available?
Group programs include evidence-based parenting workshops, wellbeing sessions, education and skills training, cultural connection activities, and children’s sessions. These programs are designed to help parents and children strengthen relationships and build supportive community networks, while developing valuable new skills.
Can I access support if I’m not referred by another service?
Yes. Families can self-refer to our family support programs. To get started, call our reception team (02) 9789 3744 or (02) 9790 1766 and complete a short intake process. If there is space available, your family will be matched with a caseworker who can provide the right support for your needs.
How do I get started with Metro Assist’s family support services?
To get started, contact our reception team on (02) 9789 3744 or (02) 9790 1766. Our staff will ask a few questions about your needs and location to confirm eligibility and connect you with the right program.
Can the service help if my child is struggling at school or with behaviour?
Yes, our family support team can work with you and your child to address school or behavioural challenges. We can liaise with teachers, link you to assessments, and provide access to in-house psychology support if needed. Our goal is to strengthen family relationships and create a safe and supportive home environment where children can thrive.
How do I register for a parenting program?
Parenting programs are advertised on our website and through community networks. To register, contact our reception team and they will record your details for the next available program. Our programs are evidence-based and include sessions such as Triple P, Circle of Security, and Tuning into Kids.
